Gold varies in tone depending on its purity and alloy composition. Each type gives the frame a distinct character:

Gold can be burnished, distressed, or matte finished, creating effects of ageing, light reflection, or satin softness. When combined with a carefully selected bolus, the final effect can be delicate and ethereal or bold and full of depth.
Clay Boluses – A Rich Range of Tones and Effects
The bolus (clay base) serves as the foundation for gilding, affecting the final shade and light reflection. Each colour adds a different character to the frame:
✔ Red bolus – the most traditional choice, enhancing the warmth and depth of gold, creating a rich, classic effect.
✔ Victorian grey – slightly dulls the gold, giving it an elegant, cool tone, ideal for modern and neutral compositions.
✔ Black bolus – creates strong contrast and enhances the brilliance of gold, adding dramatic appeal.
✔ Grey bolus – softer than black but still cools the gold’s finish, giving a refined and subtle reflection.
✔ Green bolus – less common but beautifully complements certain artworks, especially when combined with warm gold tones or patinated surfaces.
