A wide, hand-painted solid-wood picture frame in deep near-black brown, its worn edges glowing with red beneath. A Dutch Old Master-style frame for oil paintings on canvas, made to measure.

A wide, deeply hollowed wooden picture frame finished in a dark brown that reads almost black, with warm red showing through along the worn edges. It is a frame with a distinctly classical, Old Master character – substantial yet quiet, shaped to draw the eye into the canvas. It suits oil paintings best, especially work in a darker, traditional palette, and brings the sober mood of a Dutch or Flemish gallery to the wall.

The moulding is milled and reads from the sight edge outward in a clear play of light and shadow. A soft rounded inner lip sits at the edge of the picture and falls away into a deep, half-round cove – the hollow that gives the frame its drawing-in shadow and leads the eye toward the centre of the composition. From the base of the cove the moulding rises in a broad sweep to a rounded, convex outer edge, closed by a fine outer fillet. At 80 mm wide and 42 mm deep the moulding carries real mass and depth, and the satin sheen of the waxed surface spreads light gently across its curves.

Which artworks and interiors it suits

It is happiest around oil paintings on canvas – landscapes, still lifes, portraits and anything in a warm, low-key palette. The dark brown and red sit beautifully against earth tones, deep greens and the gilded accents of traditional painting, in the spirit of Dutch and Flemish framing. With glazing added, the same frame will hold prints, watercolours, drawings, old photographs and certificates that call for a little gravity.

On the wall the moulding builds the mood of a classical picture gallery and settles easily into traditional, period and country interiors, while its sombre, dark colour also strikes a strong note in modern and industrial settings. It belongs to our range of black picture frames – a frame that orders the wall and gives a painting its standing.

How it is made and finished

We mill the moulding from solid timber and join the corners with wooden splines before finishing – a far more durable joint than a simple nailed corner, and a hallmark of frames made by hand rather than on a line. The surface is hand-painted in layers: a red ground lies beneath the dark brown and is then rubbed back over the corners, high points and edges to build a hand-patinated, gently worn depth. The finished frame is sealed with shellac and wax for a warm satin sheen that softly follows every curve of the profile. Each frame is made to a specific size as a single piece; small variations in the patina are a natural mark of handwork.

How it differs from mass production

Mass-produced frames are pressed from ready-made foil- or spray-coated lengths and stapled at the corners. Here the moulding is milled from solid wood, splined at the corners, and the colour and patina are built by hand – no two are alike. The red beneath the brown is not a printed effect but a real layer of paint, revealed by hand. This is a frame made to measure for a particular painting, not cut from a stock size – hence its weight, its deep rabbet and a durability counted in decades.

Mounting and hanging

The frame is supplied without glass, as a mount for a canvas on a stretcher. The artwork is held in the rabbet from behind: as standard, on spring clips factory-fitted to the frame – they swivel aside so the canvas can be removed or swapped at any time. On request I add brass plates with screws (supplied loose) for a permanent, screwed fixing. The hanging orientation – vertical or horizontal – is chosen with your order, and the frame is fitted only in that position. A cord on D-rings is standard; a single ring is fitted on request.

Complete framing — additional options

Every frame can be completed with a full archival mounting prepared in the workshop: glass, archival backing and matting. All components are available as a custom add-on — quote on request.

Glass — four classes available

Opti White, 4mm — low-iron glass with a neutral, colourless appearance (no green tint typical of standard float glass). Available up to 90×90 cm — the only option for larger works.

Ultra Vue UV70 (Tru Vue), 2.0mm — anti-reflective glass with 70% UV protection, low-iron. Available up to 60×80 cm.

Art View — premium-class anti-reflective glass: reflection reduced below 1%, up to 75% UV protection, scratch-resistant coating, low-iron, can be cut and mounted from either side. Meets ISO 18916 (Photographic Activity Test) — safe for archival photography. Premium quality at an accessible price. Available up to 60×80 cm.

Optium Museum Acrylic (Tru Vue) — top-tier museum acrylic: over 99% UV protection, museum-grade reflection reduction, anti-static, lightweight, shatter-resistant. The museum standard for conservation work and archival photography. Available up to 60×80 cm.

Archival backing

Dibond 3mm aluminium composite panel — two layers of aluminium with an acid-free polymer core. Rigid, chemically neutral, dimensionally stable. An industry standard in archival photographic framing and art conservation.

Mounting and matting

Acid-free foam board — chemically neutral, will not yellow over time, will not react with paper or photographic emulsions. Archival standard.

Full museum framing

Combining anti-reflective UV-filtering glass, acid-free matting, Dibond backing and conservation hinging tapes provides a museum-grade mounting — protecting the work from light damage, acid migration from typical framing materials, and mechanical distortion. This type of framing is used in museums, galleries and private collections.

To order: all of the above components are available as a frame add-on on request. Please get in touch with the dimensions of your work and your preferred glass class — I will prepare an individual quote.

Made to measure

Every frame is made to the size of your artwork. Measure the width and height of the work precisely and enter them in the on-site calculator to the nearest 1 mm (e.g. 35.0 × 30.2 cm) – we build the frame with a small technical allowance (about 2–3 mm) so the work seats easily in the rabbet.

The base price is calculated per running metre of moulding. The 45° mitred corners consume additional length in proportion to the width of the moulding, and the calculator accounts for the full moulding consumption, including corners and any options selected.

The online price calculator supports artwork sizes up to 120×80 cm. Larger formats are made to individual order.

The same profile is also available with a gilded edge – see the black-and-gold gilded version. Lead time: 20–30 working days.

Frequently asked questions

What artworks does this frame suit?

Oil paintings on canvas above all, especially work in a dark, Old Master palette. With glass and backing added it will also hold prints, watercolours, drawings and photographs.

Does it come with glass?

It is supplied without glass, as a mount for a canvas on a stretcher. Glass, archival backing and matting can be added to order – quoted individually.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure your artwork and enter the size in the calculator to the nearest 1 mm. We build the frame about 2–3 mm larger so the canvas seats easily in the rabbet.

Will every frame look identical?

No. The colour and patina are built by hand, so each piece differs slightly – a natural mark of handmade work.

What is the maximum artwork thickness?

The rabbet is 20 mm deep and holds a stretcher up to about 20 mm thick.
