Decorative mirrors in ornate frames made to measure are models with a clearly craft-led character — a richer moulding profile, carefully finished corners, and considered surface treatments. Decorative mirrors in ornate frames — what sets them apart
In a craft workshop, the term "ornate frame" means something quite different from what it means in mass production. The moulding is milled from high-quality wood, and its profile — the element that decides whether the frame reads as calm or expressive — is shaped by hand. The decorative character comes from the wood itself and then from the finish applied to it: gold leaf laid one leaf at a time through water gilding over prepared bole, rub-through revealing the undercoat, layers of pigment at varying intensities. These are the techniques that give the frame its individual character — not printed patterns or applied foil.
The gilding in my frames is done with real gold leaf — most often 22-karat moon gold, with its cool, subtly silvery tone, or the more intense 23-karat yellow gold. Selected models use 6-karat white gold, which reads almost chrome-like, as well as genuine silver leaf sealed with traditional shellac and wax. This approach produces a finish that gains depth rather than degrading over time — the glow does not fade with the years.
Where decorative mirrors belong
Decorative mirrors in ornate frames earn their place in any interior that calls for a defined focal point. Above a fireplace or a console in the living room, a large wall mirror organises the composition and brings additional light. In a hallway, a mirror in an ornate frame is both practical and the element that sets the tone of the entrance — especially with a gilded or deeply saturated finish. Over a dressing table or chest of drawers in the bedroom, a richer profile creates a considered zone; in a bathroom, an ornamental frame softens the purely functional character of the space.
In modern interiors, decorative mirrors function as a counterpoint — one expressive element in a minimalist room can define the character of the whole space. In classical and glamour schemes, and in the mixed styles in between, an ornate frame sits naturally in the composition. Mirrors in this category pair well with timber, stone, velvet, and matt walls in warm shades of white, grey, olive, and navy.
Construction and materials
Every mirror in this category is made to measure against a specific order. The frame is built from high-quality wood; the corners are joined with wooden dowels, which ensures structural stability and resistance to warping over years of use. The back and sides of the frame are always finished in the same colour as the front — a detail that distinguishes a handcrafted frame from a factory one.
The standard glass is SGG Miralite Pure Diamant 4 mm, OptiWhite — a pane with an exceptionally clean, neutral tone, free of the greenish cast typical of cheaper mirrors. The black coating on the reverse stabilises the reflection and allows for optional backlight installation. The backing is HDF or MDF depending on size. Mounting is via wall brackets — included or fitted according to the indicated installation method.
Optional features
Selected models are available with a ground bevel — a subtle refinement of the glass edge that adds depth and suits classical and glamour interiors especially well. On request, I also fit an anti-fog demister mat, useful in bathrooms as it prevents condensation on the mirror surface. All options are confirmed individually after consultation.
Ordering and personalisation
Every decorative mirror in this category can be ordered in any dimension — the width and height are chosen to suit the place where the mirror is to hang. Finish personalisation is also available: the frame colour is selected from my in-house palette of high-pigmentation craft paints, alongside the gilding type (22-karat moon gold, 23-karat yellow gold, 6-karat white gold, palladium, genuine silver leaf) and the level of patina and rub-through. The range includes both wall-mounted mirrors and larger floor-standing pieces.
