When designing frames for paintings with different constructions, I always think about how the canvas “breathes.” Paintings stretched on a stretcher bar have their own volume and require a specific approach. That’s why I also design frames for canvases that ensure stability and provide the artwork with the right amount of space between the edge of the painting and the moulding. In practice, this means that every frame for large-format paintings or smaller gallery frames has a precisely designed rebate — so that the painting is neither too tightly fitted nor too loose. W świecie ramiarstwa termin „rama Guggenheima” bywa używany nie tylko przez fachowców, ale też przez kolekcjonerów i projektantów. Wbrew pozorom nie odnosi się on do jednego, konkretnego wzoru – to raczej określenie stylu oprawy, który narodził się w muzeach sztuki współczesnej, między innymi w nowojorskim Guggenheim Museum. To właśnie tam, w połowie XX wieku, zaczęto stosować proste, pozbawione dekoracji ramy, które miały jeden cel – nie konkurować z dziełem. Obraz miał być najważniejszy, a rama miała jedynie wyznaczać jego granice i wprowadzać porządek wizualny. Stąd właśnie wzięła się idea, która dziś funkcjonuje pod różnymi nazwami. W mojej pracowni nie używam prawdziwego kamienia – zamiast tego stosuję technikę marbellingu, czyli tradycyjnego malowania imitującego marmur.
