How to Choose the Perfect Glamour Mirror

02-03-2026

A glamour mirror is the piece guests notice first and remember longest. Chosen well, it reflects daylight deeper into a room, makes a modest space feel generous, and adds the confident shine that defines the glamour look. Chosen poorly, it reads as an afterthought hung on a wall. I make glamour mirrors by hand in my workshop, gilding each frame with genuine gold leaf and cutting every piece to the size a particular wall actually needs, so this guide is written from the bench rather than from a catalogue. Below I walk through the decisions that matter most: shape, proportion, frame finish and where the mirror will live.

What actually makes a mirror a glamour mirror

The glass is rarely the point. What turns an ordinary mirror into a glamour mirror is the frame: a hand-finished moulding with the warmth of gold, the cool sheen of white gold or silver, or the drama of black paired with a gilded edge. The look sits between classic and contemporary, polished and a little theatrical. If you want to see the range before reading on, my glamour mirrors are a good starting point, and the wider family of mirrors in handmade frames shows how the same craft carries across classic and decorative styles too.

Start with shape and proportion

Shape sets the mood of the piece before colour or finish does. In my experience three shapes cover almost every glamour interior:

  • Round mirrors soften a room. They suit bedrooms, reading corners and any wall that already has a lot of straight lines to balance.
  • Rectangular mirrors bring order and height. Hung vertically they lift a low ceiling; hung horizontally above a console or fireplace they widen the wall.
  • Oval and arch mirrors read as the most decorative of the three, and they work beautifully as a single statement piece in a hallway or above a vanity.

One rule holds across all of them: the larger the mirror, the greater the sense of space. A single generous mirror does more for a narrow hallway, a small bathroom or a tight entrance than several small ones scattered about. When a client is unsure, I almost always suggest going one size up rather than one size down.

The frame finish, where a glamour mirror is really decided

This is the part most online listings skip, and it is the part I care about most. A glamour frame is not simply "gold" or "silver". The tone of the gold leaf changes the whole character of the mirror, and I gild each frame to order:

  • 23-carat yellow gold gives the warmest, richest glow, the classic glamour finish.
  • 22-carat moon gold is slightly cooler and reads as refined rather than opulent.
  • White 6-carat gold or palladium sits close to silver and suits bright, contemporary rooms.

I lay the leaf by traditional water gilding on a prepared clay ground (bole), and even the colour of that clay beneath the leaf subtly shifts the final hue. The frame is joined in raw form, primed with several layers of gesso, smoothed, coloured and only then gilded, which is what produces the seamless corners that separate a bespoke frame from a mass-produced one. If you want the full detail of the process, I describe it on my water gilding page, and the same finishes run across my gold-gilded picture frames.

Choosing the frame colour for your interior

Once the gold tone is settled, the colour of the frame ties the mirror to the room. This is how I usually guide the choice:

Frame finish Effect in the room Best suited to
Gold Warmth and a sense of luxury Classic and elegant interiors
White gold or silver Light and subtle, never heavy Bright, contemporary rooms
Black and gold Strong contrast with a gilded glow Bold, modern and art deco spaces
Antique silver Aged, characterful, one of a kind Vintage and eclectic interiors

Black and gold deserves a special mention because it is one of my most requested glamour finishes: a deep lacquered black moulding with one or two hand-gilded channels. If that combination appeals to you, I have written separately about the black and gold framed mirror, and a plainer version lives among my black frames.

Glamour mirrors room by room

The right glamour mirror depends as much on the room as on your taste. A few notes from pieces I make most often:

  • Living room. This is where a large statement mirror earns its keep, reflecting lamplight in the evening and a window by day. Browse living room mirrors for proportions that suit a chimney breast or a sofa wall.
  • Hallway. An entrance is the first thing anyone sees, and a tall gilded mirror both opens the space and gives somewhere to check your reflection on the way out. My hallway mirrors are made to fit narrow walls precisely.
  • Bathroom. A glamour mirror is not off limits in a bathroom, but the frame has to be protected. I seal frames destined for humid rooms with a moisture-resistant lacquer so the gilding lasts. See bathroom mirrors for suitable finishes.
  • Bedroom. A softer, round or oval gilded mirror above a dressing table sets the tone without overpowering the room.

Why I make every glamour mirror to measure

Off-the-shelf mirrors are made to a handful of standard sizes, and walls rarely match them. When a mirror is made to measure you choose the width, the height and the orientation, and the piece is fitted to your wall rather than approximated to it. You also choose the glass: I can add a bevelled edge for extra refinement, or toughened safety glass where it is needed. Each mirror can be mounted vertically or horizontally, so a single design adapts to different spaces.

My Nero Glam 23K is a good illustration of how far this goes: a partially black-painted frame finished with 23-carat gold leaf, sealed for humid rooms, and made only to order in the size you give me. If you want something built around a specific wall, my bespoke, made-to-measure framing is the place to start.

What affects the price of a handmade glamour mirror

People often ask why two glamour mirrors of similar size can be priced differently, so it helps to be plain about it. The cost of a handmade, gilded mirror comes down to a few honest factors:

  • Size. Price follows the perimeter of the frame, since a larger frame uses more moulding, more gesso and more gold leaf.
  • Gold tone. Genuine 23-carat gold leaf costs more than white gold or imitation leaf, and that difference is real.
  • Profile width and shape. A wide or carved moulding takes more time to prepare and gild than a slim one.
  • Finish complexity. Black-and-gold, distressed and antique effects involve more stages of hand work.
  • Glass specification. Bevelled edges, low-iron glass and safety glass each add to the figure.

I price every mirror automatically from its dimensions and the options you choose, so the quote is clear before you commit. A handmade glamour mirror is an investment, but it is one that lasts decades rather than a season.

Glamour, decorative or classic, which fits you

The words overlap, so here is how I separate them. A glamour mirror leans into shine and contrast and tends to be the focal point of a room. A decorative mirror covers a broader, more ornamental field, from vintage to carved gold-leaf designs. A classic mirror is quieter and more traditional in profile. If you are still deciding, the parent mirrors in frames section shows all three side by side. You can also read more about my workshop and how I approach each commission.

Frequently asked questions

What is a glamour mirror?

A glamour mirror is a framed mirror whose frame is hand-finished for a luxurious, light-reflecting look, usually gilded in gold, white gold or silver, or finished in black and gold. The frame, not the glass, is what defines the style.

What shape of glamour mirror should I choose?

Choose round or oval to soften a room and rectangular to add height or width. Match the shape to the wall it will hang on, and favour one larger mirror over several small ones to gain the most sense of space.

Can a glamour mirror be used in a bathroom?

Yes, as long as the frame is sealed for humidity. I finish bathroom mirror frames with a moisture-resistant lacquer so the gilding is protected against steam and damp.

Are glamour mirrors made to measure?

Mine are. I make each mirror to the exact width and height you need, in your choice of gold tone, frame colour, shape and glass, so it fits the wall rather than the wall having to accommodate a standard size.

How much does a handmade glamour mirror cost?

The price depends mainly on size, the gold tone, the width and shape of the moulding, the finish and the glass. Larger frames and genuine 23-carat gold leaf cost more; the figure is calculated from your dimensions and chosen options before you order.

If you have a wall in mind and a style in your head, the next step is simple: look through my collection of glamour mirrors for a starting point, then tell me the size and finish you want and I will make it to measure.
