Hand-made, made-to-measure picture frame in off-white, with a broad, gently scooped gallery profile and real 23-karat gold leaf laid over red bole. A fine, controlled craquelure finish and the warm glow of burnished gold give it a classic, softly antiqued character, ideal for oil paintings and works on canvas.
Light but never cold: this made-to-measure picture frame pairs a warm off-white face with slim gilded beads of genuine 23-karat gold leaf. The broad, gently scooped profile draws the eye inward and gives a painting a calm, gallery-like setting, while a fine craquelure across the white surface lends a refined, softly antiqued feel. It is a white picture frame with the character of classic, museum-style framing, designed to honour the work rather than compete with it.
Read from the rabbet outwards, the moulding begins with an inner gilded bead at the sight edge, set off by a thin line of red bole that shows through the gold in places. Beyond it runs a broad, gently concave (scooped) face in off-white, covered with a network of controlled craquelure, this is the dominant decorative element of the profile. The face is closed on the outside by a second, stronger gilded bead along the outer edge, from which the moulding steps back. The moulding is roughly 60 mm wide and 38 mm deep, so the profile has real presence and reads clearly from the side as well.
Which paintings and interiors it suits
The warm white and scooped profile work beautifully with oil paintings and acrylics on canvas, especially landscapes, still lifes, portraits and compositions with a classic or traditional feel. A light frame opens up the darker passages of a painting and lets the composition breathe, so it also suits prints, watercolours and fine-art photography (with glass and a mount added). In an interior it brings together classic and light: at home in an elegant living room, in French or transitional schemes, and equally in a gallery or a formal space.

The dimensions given refer to the complete frame including the moulding. The rabbet that holds the artwork is correspondingly smaller. We make every frame to the size of your artwork, usually 2–3 mm larger than the work, so the canvas or panel fits comfortably.
How it is made and finished
The moulding is milled from solid timber, then cut and assembled into the complete frame before any painting or gilding. The corners are mitred at 45° and reinforced with wooden splines, giving a rigid, dimensionally stable structure. Only once the frame is fully assembled do we build up the finish: layers of ground (gesso and bole), the off-white paint, the controlled craquelure and the gilding.
The gilding is carried out in genuine 23-karat gold leaf using the traditional water-gilding method over red bole, which gives a warm tone and natural variation across the surface. The gilded beads are burnished with an agate stone to a bright, mirror-like shine, and the red bole shows through here and there, underlining the hand-made character of the frame. The craquelure across the white face is kept fine and controlled, adding depth and a softly antiqued feel. The white surface is sealed with a finish chosen for light colours, so the off-white stays clean and true. Each frame may differ in small details of finish, a natural feature of fully hand-made work.
How it differs from mass production
In mass production, lengths of moulding are usually finished individually and only then joined into a frame. In our workshop the order is reversed: first we build a fully assembled, well-fitted structure, then we paint, craquelure and gild the finished form. This takes more skill, but it gives an even, continuous finish across the corners and a lasting result that does not crack along the joints over the years. Water gilding in genuine 23-karat gold is a craft technique, not a print or a foil, which is why the frame gains a depth and glow that mass-produced mouldings cannot match. You will find this frame in our category of gold-gilded and partially painted picture frames.
Functionality
The frame is designed first of all for paintings on canvas and panel, without glass. As standard we fit spring clips at the back (factory-fitted), so you can insert and swap the work yourself, quickly and easily. On request we include brass plates with screws for a permanent fixing (fitted by you). You choose the hanging orientation in the product options; cord is standard, with a single D-ring available on request. If you plan to frame under glass, the full archival options are described below.
Complete framing – additional options
Every frame can be completed with a full archival mounting prepared in the workshop: glass, archival backing and matting. All components are available as a custom add-on – quote on request.
Glass – four classes available
Opti White, 4mm – low-iron glass with a neutral, colourless appearance (no green tint typical of standard float glass). Available up to 90×90 cm – the only option for larger works.
Ultra Vue UV70 (Tru Vue), 2.0mm – anti-reflective glass with 70% UV protection, low-iron. Available up to 60×80 cm.
Art View – premium-class anti-reflective glass: reflection reduced below 1%, up to 75% UV protection, scratch-resistant coating, low-iron, can be cut and mounted from either side. Meets ISO 18916 (Photographic Activity Test) – safe for archival photography. Premium quality at an accessible price. Available up to 60×80 cm.
Optium Museum Acrylic (Tru Vue) – top-tier museum acrylic: over 99% UV protection, museum-grade reflection reduction, anti-static, lightweight, shatter-resistant. The museum standard for conservation work and archival photography. Available up to 60×80 cm.
Archival backing
Dibond 3mm aluminium composite panel – two layers of aluminium with an acid-free polymer core. Rigid, chemically neutral, dimensionally stable. An industry standard in archival photographic framing and art conservation.
Mounting and matting
Acid-free foam board – chemically neutral, will not yellow over time, will not react with paper or photographic emulsions. Archival standard.
Full museum framing
Combining anti-reflective UV-filtering glass, acid-free matting, Dibond backing and conservation hinging tapes provides a museum-grade mounting – protecting the work from light damage, acid migration from typical framing materials, and mechanical distortion. This type of framing is used in museums, galleries and private collections.
To order: all of the above components are available as a frame add-on on request. Please get in touch with the dimensions of your work and your preferred glass class – I will prepare an individual quote.
Made to measure
We make the frame to the size of your artwork, in the format and orientation you choose. Lead time is 20–30 working days. The base price shown is the price per linear metre of moulding. The perimeter of your artwork is not the full length of moulding a frame needs: the 45° mitred corners take up extra length, and the wider the moulding, the more they take. The price calculator accounts for the full moulding usage including corners, plus any extras you select: glass, backing and fixing.
The online price calculator supports artwork sizes up to 120×80 cm. Larger formats are made to individual order. This moulding can also be made as a floater (floating) frame, without a rabbet, where a canvas on a stretcher appears to hover within a narrow gap, a striking choice for contemporary paintings on canvas.
