A glamour mirror in a red and gold frame. Deep red paint and real 23-karat yellow gold leaf, hand water-gilded on bole. Solid wood, made to measure in any size.

A glamour mirror in a red and gold frame — a decorative piece built around a single, confident colour statement. Deep, fully saturated red meets real 23-karat yellow gold leaf, applied by hand through traditional water gilding on bole. The mirror is made to measure in portrait or landscape orientation, in any size the room calls for, and earns its place in modern interiors that want a focal point without surrendering craftsmanship.

Where it fits

The red-and-gold frame speaks to glamour, art déco and modern-classical schemes — rooms built around rich, saturated palettes. Against a light wall (off-white, ecru, mineral grey) the red deepens and carries; against a dark wall (graphite, charcoal, bottle green) it quiets down and the gold takes the lead, catching and returning light.

The mirror works in a living room, hallway, bedroom or dining room; in a bathroom, place it in the dry zone, away from direct steam. Made to order, it can be sized to sit above a chest of drawers, a console or a mantel — or, at larger formats, used as a floor-standing mirror in a dressing room or an entrance hall.

How it is made

The frame is built from high-quality wood. Moulding sections are joined with wooden dowels while still raw, which lines up the mitred corners precisely and keeps the whole frame stable and resistant to warping over years of use. Traditional craft techniques give each piece its durability and refinement.

Once the frame is assembled, the areas destined for gilding are coated with red bole, which gives the gold its warm, full tone. Real 23-karat yellow gold leaf is then applied by hand, leaf by leaf, through water gilding, and burnished with agate. The rest of the frame — face, sides and panel — is hand-painted in a deep, saturated red and sealed with a high-gloss lacquer that both protects the surface and deepens the saturation of the colour. The result is a coherent, richly-pigmented surface, without the flat look of factory finishing.

A hand-made and hand-gilded frame in real 23-karat gold behaves differently from imitations. Dutch-metal and similar alloys dull and yellow with time; real gold stays true. In this variant the glow doesn't fade with the years.

How this frame differs from mass production

Mass-produced frames come from factory mouldings — typically foil-wrapped composite boards that imitate wood and metal. This one is built from scratch in the workshop: every step, from cutting and joining the wood through preparation, painting, gilding and burnishing, is done by hand. The work runs in short batches, with each piece finished individually — which is what gives the mirror its distinctive character and accounts for its longevity.

The range includes both wall-hung mirrors — portrait or landscape — and floor-standing mirrors sized for dressing rooms, bedrooms and formal interiors. Both follow the same craft routine.

In use

The mirror hangs on wall brackets fitted to the HDF backing. Orientation (portrait or landscape) is specified at ordering. The SGG Miralite® Pure Diamant 4 mm OptiWhite glass delivers a true, neutral reflection without the green cast found in cheaper mirrors. A dark coating on the reverse blocks light coming through from behind — on request, this makes it straightforward to integrate the mirror with discreet interior lighting, such as an LED strip tucked behind the frame.

Option: bevelled glass

Ground-bevelled glass is available for this model. The bevel can be up to 20 mm wide; around 5 mm is hidden behind the frame rebate, leaving about 15 mm visible. The bevel adds a second plane of light at the edge of the glass and sharpens the visual weight of the frame, especially under directional or raking light.

Add-on: anti-fog heating mat

The mirror can be fitted with a demister mat on the back of the glass. Once connected, it gently warms the surface and stops it from fogging up — designed for bathrooms and any room where steam is a regular presence.

Personalisation & made to measure

Size and proportions are always agreed individually — from narrow hallway mirrors through classic above-console formats to large, tall wall mirrors in portrait orientation. Beyond the base variant (deep red plus 23-karat yellow gold), other combinations are possible: a different karat of gold leaf (6K, 12K, 22K moon gold or 23K yellow), other shades for the painted panel and sides, and — on request — a different moulding width. Paint comes from a curated, richly pigmented range, so the exact tone of red can be dialled in, from a sharp, cool vermilion to a warmer carmine.

Clients are welcome to share their own references — photos, paint swatches, links — so the frame becomes a deliberate part of the room rather than an off-the-shelf accessory. Lead times are set individually before the order is confirmed, depending on the level of customisation and the studio's current production schedule.
