Black custom-made picture frame gilded with gold leaf
This solid wood frame is crafted in my workshop as a refined solution for framing both paintings and printed photographs on stretched canvases. It can be ordered in two mounting systems: the traditional version with a rebate or the floating variant, where the artwork appears suspended within the frame. Thanks to this versatility, the frame works equally well for oil paintings, modern prints, and gallery displays.
Craftsmanship and process
Each moulding is joined with wooden dowels while still raw, ensuring seamless and durable corners. The frame is prepared with traditional gesso, creating a smooth base for water gilding. The front is finished with genuine gold leaf – either white gold 6K for a cool metallic shine, or moon gold 22K on grey bole with a subtle rubbed finish that reveals the underlayer. Final hand-applied lacquers and waxes protect the surface and highlight the artisanal character of the frame.
Visual effect
The combination of black and gold creates an elegant, high-contrast composition. The white gold version delivers a crisp, modern brilliance, ideal for contemporary artworks and graphic pieces. The moon gold variant, with its delicate rubbed surface, produces a softer glow that complements the painting without dominating it.

Functionality and use
The frame can be made in two mounting systems:
- Traditional – with a rebate overlapping the stretcher.
- Floating – with an additional 1 cm gap around the artwork, giving the effect of a suspended canvas.
This flexibility makes the frame suitable for a wide range of applications, from private collections to gallery exhibitions.
