Round Frame with Tondo and Gilded Edge

This frame is designed for those who are looking for more than just a setting — it is a round frame with a tondo, made to harmonise with the artwork, enhancing its shape and composition. Created for paintings that deserve a surround as carefully crafted as the work itself. Made from high-quality wood, hand-painted in a deep, velvety shade of black, with attention to every detail.

The frame shown in the photos is finished with 22-carat moon gold leaf, applied over red bole. This warm, earthy underlayer gives the gold its exceptional depth and a slightly milky glow, reminiscent of moonlight just before dawn. Each layer of gilding is applied by hand using traditional methods perfected over centuries — a process that requires patience, precision, and care. The gilder’s hand, the brush guiding sheet after sheet of delicate gold leaf, gentle touches that define the final character of the frame.

This frame is available exclusively to order and crafted solely by myself. Each piece is made individually, without mass production, ensuring uniqueness and the highest level of craftsmanship.

Choice of Gold Leaf and Bole Colour

You can choose the shade of gold leaf and the colour of the bole in the product menu — from intense red, through ochre yellow, noble grey, to deep black. Each of these options influences the tone of the gilding and the character of the frame’s finish.

If you would prefer the frame painted in a colour other than black, this is also possible. I offer a broad palette of shades, which I can present to you in my colour catalogue. In such cases, please contact me in advance to select the most suitable tone for your artwork.

Construction and Dimensions

The frame is built with attention to proportion and strength — made from high-grade wood, joined precisely using traditional wooden dowels. This ensures both durability and a clean, seamless finish.

Frame Dimensions:

• Moulding width (excluding the tondo opening): 90 mm
• Total moulding depth: 50–65 mm
• Rebate depth (maximum painting thickness): 20 mm (deeper rebate available upon request)

Hand-Finished for a Unique Visual Effect

Every frame is hand-finished using resins, waxes, and pigments that give the surface a soft, velvety texture. The outer edges gently reflect the light with a subtle sheen, while the recessed areas remain matte. This creates a delicate interplay between light and shadow, highlighting the handcrafted character of each frame.

Mounting and Hanging System

The frame is prepared for hanging with a traditional cord system. For added stability, it is fitted with spring clips and fixing brackets that securely hold the painting in place.

Optional Additions: Glass and Backing

On request, I can supply glass and backing boards, providing extra protection for the artwork against dust and damage.

Bespoke Orders and Personalisation

Every frame is made to order. When placing your order, please provide the diameter of the tondo opening — it is important that the edge of the opening is at least 3–4 cm smaller than the dimensions of your artwork to ensure a proper fit.

It is also possible to order a round-arched or oval opening cut into the flat panel instead of the classic tondo shape. If you are interested in this option, please contact me beforehand to discuss the details.

The price includes the cost per linear metre of the moulding, as well as joining, packing, and delivery costs, depending on the size of the order.
